2 Festival of the Presentation of Our Lord (White) This day is also called Candlemas because of the tradition of blessing the year's candles.

2 Groundhog Day - Feb. 2

3 Commem. of Ansgar, Archbishop of Hamburg, Germany.
Missionary to Denmark and Sweden, died 865 AD.
Ansgar is honored as "the Apostle of the North."

5 Commemoration of the Martyrs of Japan, 1597.
The 26 martyrs were the first of hundreds of missionaries
and native Japanese Christians brutally executed in the
government's attempt to eradicate Christianity from Japan.

14 Saint Valentine's Day

14 Commemoration of Cyril, monk (died 869) and Methodius,
bishop (died 885). These brothers were born in Thessalonica,
Greece and became missionaries to the Slavic people.

15 Third Sun. of Month - remember food basket/penny jar. Church Council Meeting after Worship.

16 Presidents' Day (in honor of Lincoln and Washington)

18 Commemoration of Martin Luther, father of the Protestant
Reformation. He died in Eisleben, Germany in 1546.

20 Rasmus Jensen, first Lutheran pastor in N. America, 1620.

22 First Sunday in Lent (Purple)

23 Commemoration of Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, Turkey.
According to tradition, he became a disciple of St. John.
At age 86, Polycarp was martyred by burning in 156 AD.

23 Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg, missionary to India, 1719.
Inspired the Tamil-speaking Indian Lutherans today.

24 Festival of St. Matthias, Apostle.

25 Commemoration of Elizabeth Fedde, deaconess, 1921.
